Job Specification

This is a busy and varied role providing engineering design and consultancy services on a wide range of building structures’ projects, primarily residential and commercial buildings in all forms of construction

Knowledge and Experience

  • Chartered Fire Engineer
  • Chartered member status with the IFE (Institute of Fire Engineers)
  • MSc and/or BEng preferably Fire Engineering or related discipline
  • 2 – 30 years’ experience depending on role (typically minimum of 5+)
  • Advanced interpersonal and negotiation skills

Management Expertise

  • Management of staff
  • Managing Client portfolio
  • Reporting to senior management
  • Writing reports
  • Reviewing reports
  • High level negotiation with Regulatory Authorities (Fire and Building Control)
  • Managing and mentoring junior engineers
  • Financial management of projects and budgets

Key Responsibilities

  • Fire strategy design and solutions. A diverse range of experience within fire safety and engineering
  • Design and evaluation of Means of escape
  • CFD (computational fluid dynamics)
  • Smoke & Egress modelling & analysis
  • High rise, large commercial, residential and mixed-use blocks
  • Project management utilising multiple resources
  • Training, mentoring & coaching development of new consultants in fire engineering and fire safety management
  • Review and analysis of risk & fire safety management systems
  • Drafting and review of fire risk assessments
  • Design and review of fire systems including water supplies, sprinkler and deluge systems, fire alarms, gas suppression systems and new technologies such as water mist and oxygen depletion
  • Radiation calculations
  • Construction techniques and detailing
  • Familiar with IBC (International Building Codes), NFPA (USA Codes), LPC, BS, ISO, EN standards, codes, tests and guidance & insurers i.e. FM Global design standards
  • Design team meeting experience
  • Survey inspection and review of buildings for fire safety including compartmentation and condition surveys
  • Advanced report writing skills

Essential Skills/Experience

  • Confident with Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and methodical approach to work
  • Capable of working as part of a team, or individually using your own initiative
  • Highly organised, with the ability to manage your own time/workload effectively
