Peter E Jackman (PJ) 1942 - 2014

Peter, a leading international fire safety expert, was the founder of International Fire Consultants Ltd. (IFC).

Peter was a great friend and colleague to all of us over many years, establishing himself with a truly worldwide reputation and recognised as a UK expert on numerous International & National Fire Safety committees. Pete chaired, was responsible for and was involved in the derivation and shaping of many of the fire safety Standards and Guidance in fire resistance, fire engineering and wider fire and life safety codes.  He was also one of the founders of the Institute of Fire Safety (now largely the Engineering Council Division of the IFE) of which he was one of the first entrants.

Amongst many other achievements, such as the prestigious Peter Stone Award for his outstanding contribution to the Built Environment, Peter also set up the TRADA fire section and furnace in the 70’s. He was lead author of the UK Part 20 series of fire resistance test methods, chaired and led national and international committees writing guidance and standards on; fire resistance, fire compartmentation and fire engineering, at a time when we had little or no guidance or regulation in place.  Peter was truly one of the ‘fathers’ of fire safety design, working alongside eminent fire safety engineers and scientists such as Tony Morris, Bill Malhotra, Phillip Thomas, Dr Howard Morgan and the like.

He was an energetic, exuberant and larger than life character that lit up a room when he entered it.  His depth and breadth of knowledge on so many aspects of fire safety and wider social issues will be sorely missed, by IFC Group, the wider fire safety community, camera clubs, biker friends and his family.

Pete was a demanding and exacting task master, a man of conviction, never afraid to stand up and speak his mind and fight for what he believed was right.  A great advocate of calculation, quantification and technical quality, all attributes that are instilled in his IFC Group colleagues which helped to build the strong reputation that the companies have in the market.  Despite his immense knowledge and experience, Pete never tired of learning.  He was always ready to embrace new philosophies as well as to pass on his knowledge and wisdom to colleagues and the sector through training and lecturing.  A gifted and charismatic speaker equally at home with audiences of 1 or 300 and although he was only one voice, he has helped a generation of fire safety professionals to be better informed as a result of his efforts.

One of the things that Pete was always very proud of here is the ‘team’ approach and camaraderie. Pete was in the thick of this with sleeves rolled up and an open door policy, never one to shy from the most mundane of tasks, despite being in demand as an international expert. As IFC has gone from strength to strength we have thankfully never really suffered during recessions, invariably with a queue of projects and assignments waiting for Pete’s attention.  Pete worked tirelessly to make sure that Clients were looked after, often impacting his personal time, and he still managed to fit a huge amount of activities; family, committee work, articles, publications, photographic judging, travelling, photography, motorcycling (on his Harley Davidson!) or enduring a match with the IFC lads at Wycombe Wanderers.  The team that Peter has helped to build at IFC continues his approach which is a testament to all the hard work and dedication that he put in over the years.

The family would appreciate any donations to the Iain Rennie nurses who took such great care of Pete, especially in his final days.  If you would like to make a donation you can do this through a memorial web page that has been set up in Pete's name.
